The Polish president's secret sickness creates a political storm
Classified Polnews
Warsaw, Poland July 5, 2006 The Polish president remains in seclusion and no word has been released about the sickness that caused him to miss a meeting of the Weimar triangle. Because the Polish Government and the Polish President have taken the position that the Polish President's health is a private matter, no one knows if he is really sick or if he is sick because of an article that was written in a German newspaper.
Some have the opinion that "President Kaczynski got sick after reading an article about him in the German Tageszeitung. The article said that in 2005 election Jaroslaw got the biggest "potato" in the parliament, Lech banned gay parades and Jaroslaw lives with his mother, without a wedding."
The leader of the opposition political party Civic Platform, Donald Tusk, said that the article was nothing but trash in a trash daily newspaper and that's how it should be considered and treated.
But the Polish President's office, a full week after the article was printed, demanded a response from the German Government with its position on the article. They were politely informed by a note that the German Government would not respond.
Polish journalists are digging into this and there is a lot of spin that is making the Polish president and his staff look foolish. Not only are they looking foolish in Poland, they are looking foolish in Germany as well as the German newspaper follows up on their original article. The German newspaper, in a front-page article, writes that the Polish people do not understand satire. The original article was published on the last page of the newspaper where it normally publishes satire. On the last page of the newspaper they mock everyone and everything and the Polish journalists as well as the Polish Government completely missed this.
The German newspaper also reminded people about the Polish magazine "Wprost" cover with Erica Steinback siting on Schroeder's back. Nobody demanded a reaction from the Polish government.
The newspaper comments that their article has now become a state affair.
Many people are having a great deal of difficulty believing that the President of the country and his staff can have such a reaction to a trash article in a newspaper. It is their opinion that a president should have a thicker skin that it appears that this Polish President has. And others cannot believe that Polish journalists have spun this thing up the way they have.
The Polish president continues to remain in seclusion in northern Poland at a presidential retreat. There is no information as to whether he is really sick or if he is just hiding.
