What is to become of Poland's former Prime Minister?

Warsaw, Poland July 11, 2006 Poland's recently dismissed Prime Minister, Kaszimierz Marcinkiewicz, has been designated as the current Law and Justice Party candidate for the position of president of the city of Warsaw. The designation is simple and straightforward but when one looks at the details something seems to be amiss.

Polish government opposition party Civic Platform leader, Donald Tusk, said that Marcinkiewicz is being sent into political exile.

The former president of Warsaw is now the President of Poland. The position of the president of Warsaw is to be filled by a special election. But Law and Justice Party has delayed this election so that it can control Warsaw through the appointment of an administrator. Marcinkiewicz will immediately take that position as administrator. A new president of Warsaw will be elected during the fall 2006 elections.

As he takes the position of the administrator of Warsaw, Marcinkiewicz is resigning from his position as a member of the Polish parliament. If he does not win the election in the fall and become the president of Warsaw, he will become politically isolated.

The Civic Platform candidate for the president of Warsaw is Hanna Gronkiewicz-Walcz. She is a resident of Warsaw, a past president of the National Bank of Poland and is well respected in Warsaw.

Marcinkiewicz is not a resident of Warsaw. And his election as president would continue Law and Justice Party control over Warsaw.

Marcinkiewicz has a tough job ahead of him. There are many complaints about the traffic jams in Warsaw and nothing being done about them. There are many complaints about the conditions of roads and Warsaw and nothing being done about them. There are many comments that during the years that Law and Justice Party has controlled Warsaw nothing, or at least very little, has been done.

If the people of Warsaw reject the idea of a nonresident being the president of Warsaw and feel that it is time for a change in the administration the Warsaw, Marcinkiewicz will have no position in any government organization.

When asked about the Marcinkiewicz resignation from his position in the Polish Sejm and the possibility of him being left isolated, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Walcz commented, "That's his problem."

But in Polish politics what you see is not what you get. When President Kaczynski accepted Prime Minister Marcinkiewicz's resignation an appointed the new prime minister, Marcinkiewicz brought his wife to the ceremony. To some it appeared that Marcinkiewicz use that ceremony at the beginning of his campaign to be the President of Poland.

So it is with great interest that some are watching the former Prime Minister to see if the really going into political exile or if he is launching his campaign to be the President of Poland.
