Poland is nearing a water crisis.

Warsaw, Poland July 27, 2006 - The Polish government is preparing to ration water as conditions in Poland worsened due to a lack of rain

Poland is suffering from a severe lack of rain. In many areas of the country water supplies are dwindling. Some power plants have had to shut down due to a lack of cooling water. Polish farmers are projecting heavy losses of their crops. There is no relief in sight and the Polish government is preparing to ration water.

The weather in Poland is hot and dry. Poland is experiencing the hottest summer on record since weather records started being recorded.

The impact of this hot weather on the Polish economy and the Polish government's budget will be high. Most Polish farmers are not insured against crop loss so the Polish government will have to step in and provide financial compensation. This will be particularly important because European Union payments to the farmers will be much delayed due to failures within the Polish government to be properly organized to receive money from the European Union.

With a loss of crops there will be a rather steep increase in the price of wheat and other food products in Poland.

If the government has to start rationing water, the Polish people and the Polish economy will be subjected to a shock that they never expected.

IMF warns Poland over financial agency - The International Monetary Fund has warned Poland that plans for a unified financial services supervisory agency could expose the system to political interference.

The legislation has been criticised by Poland’s central bank, by independent economists and by business groups. Polish bankers are afraid to comment publicly, worried about being called before a special parliamentary commission investigating the banking sector, but one banker called the legislation “extremely dangerous. It concentrates enormous power in the hands of one person – the prime minister”.

The European Central Bank commented on the proposed legislation in March and came to similar conclusions to the IMF. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/424fe940-1cd2-11db-9780-0000779e2340.html Continue Reading More

The Minister of the Treasure gives contrary promises - Wojciech Jasinski promised the consolidation of power plants which being privatized.

The Ministry of the Treasure is going to consolidate the whole energy sector, Wojciech Jasinski, the Minister of the Treasure, said yesterday in the radio interview. In his opinion, there are potential buyers of ZEDO, Ostroleka and Kozienice power plants but the government has another idea.

“We want to consolidate the energy sector and then list the group on the stock exchange. It is a good and fair plan, profitable for the economy. Unless we consolidate the energy sector vertically, the others will do it”, Wojciech Jasinski said.

However, according to the government plan which is being implemented now, only ZEDO is supposed to join one of the groups – PGE. According to “PB” sources, the representatives of the remaining two power plants do not take part in the works of the teams preparing the consolidation. It is possible that Kozienice and Ostroleka would be merged with Energa or Enea distributors http://www.pulsbiznesu.pl/content.aspx?sid=6938&guid=1AA19555-CF28-4E96-909C-2FD470569CF8

Coming to America - For many Eastern Europeans a US tourist visa means more than just sending postcards and visiting tourist destinations in the Land of the Free - indeed, a tourist visa often amounts to a ticket to increased economic well-being. The practice of overstaying the length of time allowed by one's visa and illegally working while visiting the US on a tourist visa became widespread after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and it remains common even today.

As a stipulation for visa-free travel to the United States, the US requires the percentage of declined visas to travelers from any given country to be less than 3 percent of the applicants. In addition, less than 2 percent of a country's citizens can be found in violation of US immigration laws. Considering these current criteria for enabling visa-free travel, it is understandable why the citizens of new Eastern European member states of the European Union, with the exception of Slovenia, need visas for entering the United States.
