Polish journalists skeptical about reasons for drop in unemployment

Warsaw, Poland July 26, 2006 - The Minister of Polish labor announced that the unemployment rate in Poland has gone down to 16%. But Polish journalists question whether this is a real reduction in unemployment or an artificial reduction that shows increased emigration of the Polish labor force to other European Union countries.

The Polish Minister of Labour, , passed off the journalists' questions and said that the reduction in unemployment was due to an increased number of job offers and an increased labor fund. But she did not offer any numbers to indicate a growth in employment in Poland.

There are no signs of a slowing of the exodus of the Polish labor force to other European countries where work conditions are better. And there are no signs that Polish employers are able to fill the jobs that require the experience of laborers that have left the country.

With the recent opening of Italy to the Polish labor immigrant, a new wave of emigration has already started. But numbers from Italy and have not yet been received. It is likely that the first numbers received will be a further drop in Polish unemployment because of this increased immigration.
