Polish Prime Minister seems to regret dismissing Minister of Finance
Warsaw, Poland June 30, 2006 The Polish Prime Minister, Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, dismissed the Minister of Finance, Zyta Gilowska, when she made herself available for dismissal after the vetting spokesman filed a case in the vetting court that charged that she lied on her vetting statement. The Minister of Finance did not resign but left the choice of dismissal up to the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister now seems to regret having made that decision.
The dismissal of the Minister of Finance removed her from the status of being a public person. And because she is no longer a public person the vetting court can not move forward on her case unless there are special circumstances. In spite of the uproar and the accusations of blackmail and a political dirty war, the vetting court decided that there were not special circumstances and declined to go forward on the vetting of Zyta Gilowska.
Prior to the decision by the vetting court the Prime Minister described any future decision by the vetting court to not go forward in very harsh and derogatory terms. But his comments had no impact on the vetting court as far as their decision to go forward went.
The Prime Minister has now offered a new position of Deputy Prime Minister to Zyta Gilowska. When he dismissed her he said that he could not have someone in the government who had a case like this in the vetting court. Now the has changed his mind and asked her to come back into the government.
The Prime Minister now says that the reason that he dismissed Gilowska was because he was concerned about the reaction of the financial markets when they learn about the case. He had at least 10 days to consider her dismissal so he knew exactly what he was doing and he knew that her dismissal would stop the case from going forward to the vetting court and that Gilowska would not be able to defend herself.
As a journalist and dig into what is going on they have found that Gilowska said that she was warned by a member of the ruling coalition government party Law and Justice that there was a plot by senior people to destroy Zyta Gilowska. No woman who warned Zyta Gilowska of this said that she had learned it from a very senior general. When approached by reporters this woman would not make any comment.
They opposition party Civic Platform has said that this matter should go before a parliament investigating committee. But the Law and Justice Party does not want this to happen. They say that the matter is in that hand of the public prosecutor and that there is no reason to go forward with an investigating committee.
An investigating committee would make things public. With the prosecutor handling things everything will be private and not subject to criticism by opposition politicians or the journalists.
Zyta Gilowska said that she is not likely to go back to the government. She is not sure what she will do.
She has an option of applying to the vetting court for self vetting. She has no idea about what the evidence is against her and this is the only way that she can find out what it is.
When asked by journalists about her plans for the future, the Zyta Gilowska commented that she is the only rabbit being chased by all the hounds and that she was too busy running right now to be able to think about the future.
It was the prime minister's decision to dismiss her that put her in the position that she is now. Accepting his invitation to return to the government would allow her to have her vetting case go forward very easily. But it seems that she is not very happy with the Prime Minister and is not likely to return to the government.
