Drunks in Poland to lose their cars
Warsaw, Poland June 21, 2006
Poland's Minister of Justice Ziobro announced yesterday that he is introducing a bill that will have the cars of people who are found driving cars in Poland when they have more than the legal limit of alcohol in their system. The proposed law will be such that the courts can even take a car completely from the owner.
In Poland the accident rate on the roads is generally blame on the condition of the road and on a large number of people who drive under the influence of alcohol. This is a very convenient position for the Polish government and anyone else to take because it avoids the necessity of being honest about the real problem.
In Poland there is simply a lack of understanding of the necessity of understanding that when one drives that one is not the only person on the road. And that means that even though you are not interested in your own safety you have to be concerned about the safety of others.
At the same time the police department has to start policing the roads. On a recent trip to and from Gdansk Poland this author saw only one police vehicle on the 450 km trip from Warsaw to the Baltic. On the trip from Gdansk back to Warsaw there was a 100% Improvement and the author saw two police vehicles.
Anecdotal evidence from forums on the Internet shows that a large number of Polish drivers told anyone who drive safely in contempt. They openly state that people who are driving the speed limit or near the speed limit should get out of their way. And they drive assuming that the people will get out of their way. They openly state that they do not worry about crossing the double lines on the roads because the people on the other side will get out of their way.
On this of this trip back from Gdansk to Warsaw he saw a car that had been rear ended at high speed on a high-speed expressway. Apparently lower speed card did not get out of the way as the high-speed car assumed, and the high-speed car hit it squarely in the rear.
Until the Minister of Justice gets his priorities straight and stops chasing old Communists and people who he thinks are part of some ad network that has brought Poland to where it is today the Polish roads will remain a danger. And taking the cars of some drugs will not cure the problem that really exists.
The problem that has to be cured is the problem of people having no respect for the Law on the roads and, worse than that, having no respect for anyone else on the roads.
The Minister of Justice can start by getting police cruises on the roads and have them move and stop people are acting like irresponsible children. He should stop wasting time chasing old Communists and get on with protecting the people.
