A surprise Polish coalition government

Classified Polnews

Warsaw, Poland May 6, 2006 - Yesterday afternoon Poland was surprised to find that the ruling Polish political party Law and Justice had finalized a coalition agreement that included the minority party League of Polish Families into the existing coalition so that the coalition now has a majority voting power in the Polish parliament.

It was revealed that the League of Polish Families and the Law and Justice Party have been negotiating secretly for weeks. It had been expected that Law and Justice Party would attempt to increase the number of members in its coalition buy encouraging members of the League of Polish Families to leave that party and go into coalition with the Law and Justice Party on an independent basis.

The event took place under some rather interesting conditions and the commentary surround the invent is interesting.

Past Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki said that this is the beginning of the end of the political career of the head of the Law and Justice Party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski was not in Warsaw for the signing of the coalition agreement. He made a statement that it was embarrassing to have the League of Polish Families as a coalition partner.

His brother, Lech Kaczynski, the President of Poland, essentially apologized for the Law and Justice Party having to form a coalition as it did. He did so by saying that the coalition had to be formed this way because it was the fault of the largest minority party Civic Platform.

Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz did not seem very enthused in his announcement of or discussion of the new coalition. His demeanor was in stark contrast to his typical cheery and up-beat announcements and comments.

A quick poll on the Internet by one of the local newspapers showed that about 57 percent of the people felt that the coalition would last no more than one month.

The makeup of the coalition is such that the Prime Minister is having difficulty in finding a new Minister of Foreign Affairs to replace the one that resigned because he did not want to represent Poland with the coalition as it stands. At least one top-rated candid for this position declined because he does not like the makeup of the coalition.

Financial market analysts say that the markets will not be affected by the formation of the coalition. But they say that the markets will be affected by what the coalition does in the future.
