The true face of Poland is now visible
Warsaw, Poland April 19, 2006 - The visible face of Poland is changing. And the face that it is now showing is the face that has been temporarily hidden behind the facade of Poland being a progressive society. With the ascension of the ruling political party Law and Justice to the position of controlling a minority government that is bringing in other minority parties in order to form a coalition that will give the coalition the majority of votes in the Polish parliament, the facade has been moved aside and the true face of Poland now shows clearly.
The phenomenal growth of Poland since the changes that occurred after 1989 were a result of a curious mix of free market capitalism that bordered on robber capitalism and the desire to move the country in a direction that would give the polish people living standard equal to those found in the West. But while moving forward the people retained the attitude that they wanted the benefits of communism in the workplace while enjoying the benefits of capitalism at the dinner table.
The changes that occurred generally occurred in the major cities. The residents of Warsaw and the companies that invested in businesses in Warsaw lead the economic revolution. Other cities and regions benefited to lesser degrees.
But the people in the countryside and the older residents in the cities did not participate in this economic revolution. The country split into the economically elite, those left out of the system, and a large population of well educated young people who set their own lifestyle and future.
Before the elections of 2005, governments that had an interest in moving the country forward dominated and widened the gap between the economic elite and those left out of the system. But with the election of Law and Justice government in 2005, those left out of the system have taken control. In order to consolidate its position and to achieve a working voting majority in the Polish parliament, the Law and Justice government has been involved in forging a coalition made up the fringe parties that represent, in total, the majority of the Polish population.
The Polish political party Civic Platform that represents business and social interests that rely on the free market system has been sidelined into an ineffective position in the Polish parliament. The Civic Platform supports the policies that made the country into what many in the West consider a free-market enclave in socialist europe. They definitely do not have, and never have had, the support of the majority of the Polish people. Currently, depending on who takes the poll and when the poll is taken, the Civic Platform has only about a 30% support level.
The young people who make up the progressive portion of the Polish population are leaving Poland to work in Western Europe. Many Polish professionals are also leaving Poland since they find work conditions in Western Europe much better. So the voter support base for a party such as Civic Platform is not likely to grow unless there occurs in the Polish economy an economic catastrophe.
Law and Justice Party has said that it is intent on destroying the system that has been behind the growth and changes in Poland since 1989. They see an evil network of people and businesses that they want to eliminate.
The coalition being formed by the Law and Justice Party brings into the government all the minority parties that represent the people who feel that they have been left out or left behind. These people remember the good days of communism and want the benefits of communism restored. At the same time they want the benefits of capitalism. They support destroying the system that has been controlling the growth and direction of the country.
The minority parties that are being brought into the coalition with a Law and Justice Party are a leftist parties. That is only natural because Law and Justice Party is a leftist Party itself. The Law and Justice Party is a party of the right only in the sense that its members are generally devout Catholic. But economically they are as far left as, if not farther left than, the post Communist government that was just voted out of power.
The face of the government that is being formed is nothing more than a government that reflects the face of the majority of the Polish people. And it is not likely to change.
The policies that are being discussed by the new coalition government center around many social benefits and give away programs that reek of the Communist times. That is what the people want and that is what they will get in order to induce them to keep the current rulers in power.
The West may soon come to realize that you can take communists out of the government but that you cannot take communism out of the people. They will also realize that Poland is a socialist country and will follow socialist policies. And the West will be shocked by the changes in economic policies that start to affect it.
The West will soon realize that the new face of Poland is really the true face of Poland that has been hidden only temporarily and the new face will change the world view of Poland..
