Poland lacks direction as political chaos reigns
Warsaw, Poland April 13, 2006 - Expressing his concern over the failure of his political party Law and Justice to form a majority ruling coalition in the Polish parliament, party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski said that Poland was like a car without an engine. Minority political party leader of the political party PSL, Pawlak, said that he had thought Poland was like a car whose driver did not have his hands on the steering wheel. But now he understood that the driver did not have this hands on the steering wheel of a car that had no engine.
And so time passes as the Law and Justice Party flops about trying to create a coalition out of parties of both diverse backgrounds and questionable reputations. The parties with which Law and Justice is discussing a coalition have very little in common. And their goals are more at odds with each other than they have in common.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski and his brother, the President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski, first used a series of threats of new elections to attempt to force two minority parties, Samoobrona and L P R, to heel under what they called the stabilization pact. Even though the stabilization pact was signed a, it lasted no more than one month and Poland was thrown back into political chaos.
Now Jaroslaw Kaczynski is trying to make a coalition up of the same two parties, or parts of them, and others so that he can have a voting majority in the Polish parliament. As he goes forward on this process it seems that the emphasis in the government is on forming a coalition rather than running the country.
The political chaos is starting to take a toll not only on the country but on the attitude of the Polish people toward the Kaczynski brothers. Media coverage of Jaroslaw Kaczynski has shown a man who is quite an unpleasant individual and who does little more than threaten and criticize.

According to a recent CBOS opinion poll, 11 percent of Poles have lost confidence in president Lech Kaczynski over the last few months, while Jaroslaw Kaczynski's ranking plummeted by 10 percent. The analysts blame chaos in the country and the constant political turmoil for this poor result.
Poland has come into the European Union with an economy that is many years behind economies of the countries to the West. And Poland has a long way to go to catch up in a short time. But Kaczynski and the government that he has put in place seems intent on changing or stopping the growth that has driven the country forward since 1989.
"Poland's extraordinary founding capital is being wasted away." - Bronislaw Geremek, former Foreign Affairs Minister and current MEP, on the political situation in Poland.
The latest efforts at coalition forming are supposed to be completed this week. If a coalition is in fact formed, perhaps the country will have some defined path that and it will follow. At the same time should it prove that the parties making up the coalition have so many differences that they cannot overcome and throw the country into continued to political chaos, the impact on the country's economy might not be pleasant.
Poland right now it is dominated by bickering, complaining, threats and intimidation in the political sphere. It is not moving forward. Even though it is a car without an engine, Poland has enough forward momentum direction so that if it is not controlled it can crash.
