The Polish government will continue to press for new elections

Warsaw, Poland 22 March, 2006 - The Leader of the dominant Polish political party Law and Justice, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, has stated that he intends to press forward with a bill to dissolve the Polish parliament and hold new elections prior to Pope Benedict's visit on May 25, 2006.

Because the leading opposition party Civic Platform has taken a position against this bill, there is little likelihood that it will pass. Commentators opine that Kaczynski is making his move for political reasons rather than for some sincere desire for new elections. They believe that Kaczynski wants to use any objection to the elections by Civic Platform as a means to reduce Civic Platform’s popularity with the Polish public.

As for the Civic Platform’s objection to the elections, Kaczynski says that the Civic Platform is looking out for its own clinical interests rather than for the good of the country.

In the background of the debate over the new elections, there continues the battle among the so-called stabilization pact parties.

Andrzej Lepper, leader of the political party Samoobrona, announced that he wants to see Jaroslaw Kaczynski as the Prime Minister and him , Andrzej Lepper, as Deputy Prime minister.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski says that there will be only one Prime Minister and that Prime Minister will remain Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz.

Andrzej Lepper also continues to press for a formal coalition between the Law and Justice Party and his party, Samoobrona. Kaczynski continues to sidestep the issue.

Meanwhile, the third member of the stabilization pact political parties, the League of Polish Families, has complained that the Law and Justice Party is behind a newspaper headline that blames the League of Polish Families for bankruptcy of a bank. As this stands the president of the bank who allegedly looted the bank through a loan scheme, was a member of the political party League of Polish Families. On the board of directors was a leader of the political party League of Polish Families, Roman Giertych.

Prior to this headline News, there was little publicity given to this alleged bank looting. Giertych denies any involvement in the alleged looting.

The bill for new elections is supposed to be presented to the same this week.
