Polish Public Opinion On The Economy
The ruling Polish government political party Law and Justice has been engaged in self created battles with many segments of Polish society. The most recent and most visible battle currently involves an attack on the National Bank of Poland and its president, Leszek Balcerowicz, with a peripheral attack on a bank merger with an Italian bank.
The battle has dominated the news. Both newspaper and television coverage have been extensive and in-depth.
Initial polls showed that approximately 40% of the Polish people supported the government pressure that was placed on the National Bank of Poland and its President Leszek Balcerowicz. But it now seems that public opinion is changing.
A poll now shows that some 59% of the Polish people feel that the attack on the bank is not good for the Polish economy.
Another poll shows that there is a growing dissatisfaction with the Polish government's handling of the economy. The poll shows both that there are fewer people satisfied with the government's handling of the economy and shows also an increase in the number of people who are not satisfied.
The third poll shows that the support for the main opposition political party, Civic Platform, now exceeds the support for the ruling party Law and Justice.
Poland's Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz responded to reporters' questions about these poll figures with a comment that his government was not ruling based on popularity polls.
But even though the Prime Minister expressed his lack of interest in the public opinion polls, another member of his government questioned whether polls were being properly run. This has prompted some commentators to question whether the government will now launched an investigation into whether public opinion polls of being run assumption part of a conspiracy to hurt the Polish government.
No reason has been given for the general public's dissatisfaction with the Polish economy. The Polish government has made some very highly publicized laws that are giveaway programs designed to put money in the pockets of its voter base. That such a high percentage of the people, however, feel the government is not doing a good job in the economics sphere is somewhat interesting.
