The Polish Government Of Destruction
Warsaw, Poland March 20, 2006 - The leader of the Polish party, Law and Justice, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, has said
that it is his intent "to destroy the system that has dominated the Third Republic for the past 17 years. "
The system that has dominated the Third the Republic of Poland for the past seventeen years has taken the country from what can be described as retarded economic conditions to a dynamic growing economy that now provides some of the most dynamic and high quality products and services in Europe.
Kaczynski believes Poland to requires a moral revolution and that thisThird Republic of Poland should be remade into a Fourth Republic of Poland which shall be fashioned in his vision.
In his quest to create the Fourth Republic of Poland, Kaczynski has been acting true to his word and has been working to destroy anything that he considers inimical to his goals. He and his government have been attacking those people and politicians that he considers to be standing in his way as he marches toward imposing his own version of the absolute truth on Poland.
No person or institution, save certain factions within the Roman Catholic Church, is immune from his attacks. The millionaire Roman Catholic priest, Father Tadeusz Rydzyk, has been useful to Kaczynski in publishing Kaczynski ' s opinions, which opinions, incidentally, others consider blatant broadcasting of propaganda. This millionaire Roman Catholic priest whose work has been subject to much criticism and accusations of illicit business practices, but because he is a useful to Kaczynski, has been immune from the attacks that Kaczynski has launched on other media services and institutions.
Kaczynski has insulted the Supreme Court of Poland, his government has accused the Supreme Council lawyers of being involved in corruption, he has attacked the current and past presidents of the National Bank of Poland, he has attacked the media and the list goes on.
Few commentators would disagree with his statement that corruption is rampant in Poland. It is a legacy of the communist system but also in tune with common business practices in Europe. And there's no doubt that Poland must do something about the rampant corruption.
Kaczynski appears determined to destroy a anyone or anything that may hint of corruption. But at what cost?
Donald Tusk, leader of the opposition political party Civic Platform, has said that the Kaczynski government is returning Poland to a rule of law similar to what was the rule of law under communism.
European commentators, particularly commentators in Germany, have also opined that Poland is returning to a government that operates as one that enforces totalitarian communism.
Many others feel that Kaczynski is returning the country and the economy to central planning and control and point out specific instances to support their arguments. For instance, Kaczynski intends to create a super agency that would supervise the banks, financial markets and insurance.
Marek Borowski, the leader of the left-wing Social Democracy Poland, believes that this super agency will hold enormous power since it will have the right to order inspections and levy fines. As the current regulatory scheme stands, each of these sectors of the financial markets is supervised by a different agency. No one person controls everything. Borowski says that by controlling this new agency, Kaczynski can decide which companies can or cannot get loans.
As Kaczynski consolidates power under his government, it remains to be seen how he will use his power. He has stated that he will destroy the system. Once he destroys the system, it remains to be seen what he will put in its place.
Will he destroy just anyone who opposes him just because they oppose him? Or will he take the approach of creative destruction and truly rebuild a democratic Poland?
“Jaroslaw Kaczynski, a conservative and populist, though far from being as primitive as Lepper or as backward as Father Rydzyk. has become the first credible leader of the disappointed. “ Marek Beylin, a columnist for Gazeta Wyborcza daily.
