The Polish Roman Catholic Church on the proposed Polish elections - No Comment
Warsaw, Poland - 26 March,2006 - The proposed bill for new elections to be held in Poland prior to Pope Benedict ' s visit to Poland on May 25, 2006 has not been endorsed by the Polish Roman Catholic church. In fact, the official church spokesman for Poland indicated that even though there were varying positions and opinions taken by the bishops in the Roman Catholic Church in Poland, the church was not taking a position and would not issue a comment on the matter.
The Polish political party that put the bill before the Polish parliament, Law and Justice, has been pushing for the elections prior to Pope Benedict ' s visit. It has been discussing these elections and promoting the elections on the Roman Catholic radio station, Radio Maria.
The opposition party, Civic Platform, whose support for the bill is necessary for it to pass, has opposed the bill on several grounds one of which is that an election during this period would interfere with Pope Benedict's visit.
The Roman Catholic Church in Poland has had to respond to many questions from journalists seeking a position on the election. Comments have varied from a simple declarations that the Pope's visit is not negotiable. And that the time of the Pope's visit should be a time of peace and a time for reflection.
Civic Platform leader Donald Tusk has said that he has received many phone calls indicating that the Catholic Church does not support the elections prior to the Pope's visit.
By not supporting the new elections, commentators are saying that the Catholic Church is against the elections.
The lack of endorsement by the Catholic church for the elections proposed by Law and Justice is seen by some as a surprise to the Law and Justice party. The Law and Justice and party has been promoting itself to its Roman Catholic voter base through constant appearances on the Roman Catholic radio station, Radio Maria. It is seen as a clear signal from Roman Catholic Church that the Roman Catholic Church will support its own interests rather than those of a political party, even though that political party and expresses support for the Roman Catholic Church.
And leaves the Law and Justice Party and a somewhat uncomfortable position because they surely know that the Roman Catholic Church does not appreciate the proposed elections and that if they continue on the past that they have been they will be working against the interests of the Roman Catholic Church.
In spite of this, President Lech Kaczynski has invited Civic Platform leadership to the presidential palace on Monday to discuss the elections.
Law and Justice Party Leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, says that the Civic Platform is working for its own political interests and not for the interest of the country.
