Will the Polish government change direction?

Warsaw Poland March 27, 2006 - Yesterday, the President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski, invited the leaders of the government opposition party Civic Platform to the Presidential Palace in order to try to convince them to support the motion that is currently before the Polish parliament, which motion would dissolve the parliament and cause the holding of elections prior to Pope Benedict ' s visit to Poland on May 25, 2006.

The President failed in his attempts to convince the Civic Platform leaders to support the motion. It is said that the President used the same arguments to try to convince the Civic Platform to support the motion that were by the President's brother, Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

Speculation is rife that the ruling government party, Law and Justice, will now consider the formation of a coalition with the radical left political party Samoobrona.

When the Law and Justice Party was not in power, it criticized the then ruling party< SLD, for informally making some back room deals with Samoobrona. It was highly critical of the Samoobrona party leader, Andrzej Lepper, because of his criminal record. It was the Law and Justice Party position that no one with a criminal record should be involved in the Polish government.

Now that the Law and Justice Party is in power, however, it is openly dealing with Andre Lepper and Samoobrona. It is even now speculated that Andrzej Lepper will be given the position of Deputy Prime Minister.

Some are questioning the lack of sincerity on the part of the Kaczynski brothers who now will accept a criminal into their government as a matter of political expediency. But while they will accept Andrzej Lepper into the government will all members of the party agree to that?

It has been rumored that the Prime Minister, Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, and Law and Justice Party Leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, have been at loggerheads over many issues. Could it be that Prime Minister Martine Kazimierz, who enjoys the highest support of any Polish politician, would not accept Andrzej Lepper and Samoobrona into his government? Could it be that a group who would not compromise their principles for political expediency would form some alliance with the Civic Platform?

A leading member of the Civic Platform, Jan Rokita, said "For the Civic Platform to work out a deal with Marcinkiewicz's group and consequently create a joint government would not be any problem."

The only thing that can be said now about Polish politics and which way things will head is that Andrzej Lepper and Samoobrona have become very important to the future of the Law and Justice party.
