Bird Flu In Poland

Bird flu has finally been found in Poland. The Bird flu had been found in countries all around Poland, but not in Poland. It finally was found in the region around Torun, Poland that lies about 200 kilometers north west of Poland's capital, Warsaw.

Poland's Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz has said, "When the virus is discovered, which has to be expected, all the specialist services will be mobilized." Now that the virus has been discovered, a "crisis unit" has been set up in Torun and access to the area where the dead birds were found has been restricted.

The media has gone into full speed ahead on speculation. Expert after expert has been providing insight, advice and predictions.

But just what is being done or can be done remains to be seen. Imposing traffic restrictions in the Torun region is not going to affect birds that neither use roads nor obey the laws of the Polish Government. Journalists roam everywhere looking for a story and are likely to be prime virus vectors. And since the virus has not yet jumped to human beings, a vaccine cannot be developed.

The only fairly safe prediction that can be made is that chicken consumption will decrease and birds will be killed. This will be expensive and the government will be expected to come up with compensation money for the farmers.

The country now awaits the mobilization of all the specialist services and the protections that they can provide, the destruction of chicken flocks and an increased budget deficit.

The birds will continue to fly, and die, and nature will take its course. If the virus mutates, then something more than cosmetics will have to be considered.
