Posted 15 February, 2006 Summary of Comments Made On President Kaczynski's Announcement To Not Hold Early Elections
The main opposition party in the Polish Parliament, the Civic Platform, had some scathing comments about the consolidation of power and humiliation of the minority parties that occurred on Monday, 13 February, 2005. Here are brief English summaries. You can read the press releases from the Civic Platform, in Polish, by going to the referenced links.
Jan Rokita Member of Parliament from Civic Platform - Rokita took his usual cynical view of the President and his party. Rokita was sure that after throwing the country into confusion and many in the media and politics into a near state of hysteria, that the decision of the President would be no decision. He described the whole event as depressing political theatre.
Donald Tusk Chairman of Civic Platform - Tusk said that President Kaczynski has demonstrated that he is the front man for a group of four. The group is Jaroslaw Kacysnki, leader of PIS, Roman Giertich, leader of LPR, Andrzej Lepper, leader of Samoobrona, and Father Tadeusz Rydzyk, a radical, nationalistic priest of Radio Maria fame. This group represents about 5 million Poles and not majority of the people.
He opines that President Kaczynski has shown himself to be the President supporting a party and not a President of the people.
Grzegorz Schetyna Secretary General of Civic Platform – He opined that President Kaczynski and his Brother continue to blame PO for not forming a coalition. And by the events surrounding the amendment to the stabilization pact (STAPACT) they have shown what a coalition partner would have to expect from them - political blackmail.
