Polish LPR – Support Us Or We Are In The Opposition

Warsaw, Poland 28 February, 2006 - The Polish political party LPR signed a stabilization pact with two other Polish political parties, Samoobrona and the ruling Polish government party, PIS. The details of the pact are not publicly known, but what is known is that there is supposed to be at least a modicum of cooperation. But to date, cooperation has generally meant that Samoobrona and LPR follow the dictates of PIS.

For the past couple weeks it seems that that Samoobrona ad LPR are starting to rebel against being used by PIS for PIS purposes. Roman Giertych, Leader of LPR, in particular has been vocal on TV making demands.

Yesterday, Roman Giertych stated that his party would withdraw its support from the PIS government if it did not support his proposed changes to the tax system. His party wants to introduce tax relief for families with children and to provide a monthly allowance for families with four children. He said that he expected the support for his programs or he would be in opposition to the government.

Andrzej Lepper commented on Giertych’s demands by saying that like a car, the stabilization pact needs a little grease sometimes.

The PIS government finds itself in a box of sorts. The Finance Minister, Zita Gilowska, announced that she is going to submit a bill that will revolutionize Polish finances. It will hit many powerful people in the pocketbook so she expects resistance. She said that if the government does not support it, she would resign.

The Finance Minister is an economic liberal who is likely to not get the support of either Lepper or Giertych. And her proposals are likely to not be acceptable to either Lepper or Giertych. So PIS will have competing pressures.

If the PIS party leadership acts to form, they will ignore both and do their own thing.
