Polish Public Opinion Dips
The Polish public opinion polls prior to 21 February, 2006 have shown solid support for the Polish government, the Polish Parliament and the Polish President. But things have changed, if the results of a poll on 21 February, 2006 are to be believed.
The poll has shown both a drop in the number of people who think positively and an increase in the number of people who have a negative opinion.
This is but one poll and may not indicate any trend. But it is remarkable to note that the sudden change in opinions and something that should be closely watched by all.
What is behind the drop? Perhaps the results of another poll add a little light. A PBS poll has just found that 48% of Poles think that freedom of speech is under attack from the new PiS government. The feeling is that religious groups, outside of the Established Church, are having an unhealthy influence in the governing of the country.
(“Religious groups outside the Established Church” includes the Radio Maria Radio network of people that has openly been courted by the ruling Polish Government Party, PIS. And where does Radio Maria get a large part of its funding? From people in the United States.)
Are the people starting to feel the pressure being applied to reform the country, to control the press and to turn everything upside down? Are they starting to see the true colors of the people behind the current government? Are they starting to resent influence not controlled by the democratic process?
Time will tell.
