Marcinkiewicz - Prime Minister Or Puppet
Warsaw, Poland, 19 February, 2006 - Polish government Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz once said that he wants to be like Margaret Thatcher. And he has been doing a lot of marketing of his policies and what he has done over the first hundred days. Polls indicate he has a favorable rating by about 65% of the Polish populace.
But is he in charge? Is he going to set policy and run the government or be a puppet minister?
On Friday, 17 September, 2006, the leader of the ruling Polish political party PIS, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, took to the floor of the parliament and spoke 50 minutes. He spoke without notes.
In his extended time on the floor he spoke of what he planned and how he was going to reform Poland. He spoke like a man on a mission who was in total control and not interested in what others thought.
Commentators and critics alike have interpreted this speech as a demonstration that his brother, Lech Kaczynski, the President Of Poland, and the Prime Minister Of Poland, Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, are doing little more than taking instructions from him. To them, it means that Jaroslaw Kaczynski has essentially the power of the President Of Poland and the Prime Minister Of Poland in his hands.
What will the long term effect of this speech be on the Prime Minister who said he wants to be like Margaret Thatcher? If the testy response to a reporter who attempted to ask Prime Minister Marcinkiewicz about the topic is any indication of his feelings, there may be some effect sooner than later.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski said just after the elections that he did not want to take the Prime Minister's position because Poland was not ready to have twin brothers as Prime Minister and President. So Marcinkiewicz got the job.
When he got the job, what was it that he was promised? Was he to be a puppet and marketing mouthpiece or was he given a position that would allow him to be like Margaret Thatcher?
In any case, Jaroslaw Kacynski has stated that he will reform Poland and create the Fourth Republic. Will Prime Minister Marcinkiewicz have any say in what the Fourth Republic will be?
