Lepper Is Ignored By Poland's Leaders So He Ignores Back
Warsaw, Poland 25 February, 2006 - Poland's political party Samoobrona Leader Andrzej Lepper has been smarting since his request for a meeting with the ruling Political party PIS) Leader Chairman Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
Yesterday in the Polish Parliament Andrzej Lepper got even with PIS by doing nothing. And by doing nothing, he created a scene in the Parliament.
The occasion was the vote on a new government spokeswoman for children's rights. PIS put forward its candidate along with a list of candidates put forward by other parties. Lepper's party did not vote.
When the voting was finished, no candidate had enough votes to be elected. Of course, Lepper and Samoobrona, as members of the PIS stabilization pact three was expected to vote for the PIS candidate. But, according to Lepper, the stabilization pact did not require him and his people to vote for the PIS candidate.
With the failure of the vote, Roman Giertych, also a member of the stabilization pact three and Leader of the Political party LPR, took the floor and complained that the Speaker of the Sejm had promised that if LPR supported the PIS candidate for the Citizens' Rights, PIS would support the LPR candidate for Children's Rights. there followed an exchange between the two that did not make either look good.
That was further followed by the opposition party ( Civic Platform) leader Donald Tusk to take to the floor and accuse the Speaker of the Sejm of some form of political corruption. He opined that the speaker should not be involved in political deals like that but should be an impartial arbiter of Sejm procedures.
The Speaker of the Sejm reacted and said that he would refer Donald Tusk for discipline.
As things concluded, Andrzej Lepper said that this all would not have happened if the Leader of PIS had taken the time to hold a meeting with him as he, Lepper, had requested.
How long will the stabilization pact keep things stable? How long will the government last? Not long if two of the three signatories are publicly complaining and causing trouble like this.
