Laughing At Lepper
Warsaw, Poland 23 February, 2006 - The leader of the Polish political party Samoobrona, Andrzej Lepper, is not happy. And he is publicly not happy. He is publicly not happy on public television.
Why is this strong willed man not happy? Because, he says, he is being laughed at by members of the PIS Government. Not only are they laughing at him, they are ignoring him.
Recently Andrzej Lepper was driven to sign a so called stabilization pact with the ruling Polish political party PIS. He was then presented an amendment to that stabilization pact with an ultimatum that was essentially sign or face elections. To some observers, he was ordered to heel and he heeled. To him, the stabilization pact was just clarified by requiring that the three parties to it work together.
So, in the spirit of working together, Andrzej Lepper’s party submits a bill concerning excise tax on fuel used for farming. The Government submits its own bill and ignores Lepper’s and Lepper. And some people in PIS, according to Lepper, are laughing at him, to boot.
An insulted Andrzej Lepper has asked for a meeting with Mr. Chairman of PIS. But Mr. Chairman is too busy right now to see Mr. Lepper. Any meeting will have to be scheduled some time later because Mr. Chairman has more important things scheduled now.
How long will Andrzej Lepper stay on the heel when he is first laughed at and then ignored when he complains? He had better get a reward soon or he is liable to stop barking and start biting?
If Lepper is not soon treated with the respect that he expects, on can expect him to bolt on the stabilization pact. How likely is it that he will be treated with respect by PIS? Well, for whom have they shown respect to date?
