Ignoring The Support

Warsaw, Poland, 19 February, 2006 - The ruling Polish political party PIS owes its ability to get anything done to the cooperation of two minority parties, the League of Polish Families (LPR) and Samoobrona. Without the support of these two parties, PIS, having only a minority position in the Polish government itself would likely not be able to get much accomplished.

LPR and Samoobrona are now signatories to a so called Stabilization Pact requires them to support PIS without question. Through a series of self created crisis, PIS made it a matter of these parties having to sign the Stabilization Pact pretty much as presented to them or to face early parliamentary elections and lose position in Parliament.

To some observers the act of signing the Stabilization Pact was in fact a matter of submission to PIS and acceptance of a role in which LPR and Samoobrona could not criticize but had to vote as instructed with their reward being that they could stay in Parliament. Of course, the parties to the pact put a different spin on it.

Many have been waiting for things to get to the point where Samoobrona and LPR will finally say enough and rebel.

On Friday, 17 February, 2006, Samoobrona and LPR may have started down the path to rebellion. The step was small, but it shows a sign of some hurt egos of some very egotistical people.

The Polish Prime Minister Marcinkiewicz took to the floor and profusely thanked PIS party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski for all his support in making the Prime Minister's first 100 days so successful. Then Jaroslaw Kaczynski took to the floor and profusely laid congratulations and thanks upon Polish Prime Minister Marcinkiweicz. Notably, neither LPR nor Samoobrona were either mentioned nor given thanks.

The leaders of Samoobrona, Andrzej Lepper, and LPR, Roman Giertych, then took to the floor and complained that they had not been mentioned or thanked. They were visibly unhappy.

Both leaders, Lepper and Giertych have been brought to heel. But it seems that unless someone starts petting them and throwing them a PR bone once in a while, they may start biting instead of just barking.
