Cemeteries in Poland
Cemeteries in Poland occupy a special place in the Polish culture. By custom, people visit family graves and graves of historical figures on all Christian holidays, birthdays and anniversaries of death.
On each visit, graves are cleaned, flowers added and candles lit. Often on will see hundreds of lit candles on one grave.
Some people make extra efforts to buy more candles than they need for their family graves in order to have some to put on graves that are bare of recent attention.
Families will drive hundreds of kilometers, particularly on All Saints Day, to visit graves in distant cemeteries Some of the holidays become major travel days as people go from town to town and cemetery to cemetery.
The color of the flowers make the cemeteries beautiful during the day and the lighted, colored candles make a remarkable display at night.
